The southern town of Ponta do Ouro is one of Mozambique's most popular beach destinations, especially with South Africans, thanks to its easy driving distance from Johannesburg and its proximity to the capital city of Maputo, just 120km away to the north. It's renowned for its amazing diving and snorkelling, as well as deep-sea fishing and is a vibrant, buzzing little town with a host of attractions for visitors of all ages.
Just 10km from the South African border, Ponta do Ouro offers wonderful laid-back charm combined with stunning beaches, dense dune forests and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. With its open-air market, "cantinas" and curio stalls, it's got a wonderful seaside holiday feel. Rustic restaurants just off the beach offer wonderful traditional Mozambican favourites such as fresh prawns peri peri and, of course, the best seafood you will ever taste!
The name Ponta do Ouro means "tip of gold" and refers to the point of land that defines the southern-most part of town, forming the sheltered bay that offers a range of watersport opportunities.
