One of the largest man-made reservoirs in the world, Lake Kariba was formed by the damming of the Zambezi River at the Kariba Gorge with a massive hydro-electric dam. The lake took five years to fill between 1958 and 1963 following a massive relocation of both people and wildlife known as "Operation Noah". Today, Lake Kariba is a 280km long, 40km wide body of water that's home to an incredibly diverse range of wildlife and is one of Zimbabwe's most popular tourism destinations.
With 2,000 km of shoreline, Lake Kariba is a truly impressive place to explore, especially by boat, either on excursions from the various lodges and camps on its shores on from a luxury houseboat. It forms a natural border between Zimbabwe and neighbouring Zambia in the north of the country, within easy distance of Victoria Falls and Mana Pools National Park.
Situated on the shores of the lake is the beautiful Matusadona National Park which offers some of the most spectacular game viewing in the country. With its rich grasslands and an abundance of water, it's home to huge herds of buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, and impala as well as elephant. It also has a high concentration of predators, so you can expect incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.
The lake itself is home to crocodiles and hippo as well as a variety of fish, making it one of the best fishing spots in Southern Africa, especially if you are looking for exceptional tiger fishing. The birdlife is equally spectacular, as are the landscapes, with heavily wooded islands silhouetted against the sparkling water and huge, incredibly blue skies backed by dramatic mountain ranges on both sides.
