Frequently voted as one of the world's most beautiful cities, Cape Town offers breathtaking scenery, blue flag beaches, culture and history aplenty and is known as South Africa's Mother City, thanks to its status as the country's first European settlement. Officially founded on 6th April 1652 by Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company, the Dutch weren't actually the first Europeans to set foot here...
It's known that Portuguese sailors under the command of Antonio de Saldanha made port here on their way to India in 1503 and climbed Table Mountain, causing a fracas with the local Khoi people in the process. Europe's seafaring nations followed Portugal's lead and put into Table Bay for fresh water and provisions, with the Dutch quickly establishing it as a regular lay-over en-route to the East Indies and the spice islands... The Dutch East India Company thus established an outpost and Van Riebeeck arrived to build a fort and proper infrastructure. The rest, as they say, is history!
This small Dutch outpost is now South Africa's most iconic city, loved the world over. Cape Town is a cultural melting pot with a unique, pulsating rhythm that appeals to young and old alike, from the vibrant restaurants, cafes and shops of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront to the genteel elegance of the Company Gardens and magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens that sit beneath the ever-present massif of Devil's Peak and Table Mountain.
Located on the Cape Peninsula, close to the Southern-most tip of the continent, Cape Town offers visitors a smorgasbord of things to do and see and ways to do and see them! You can embark on a chauffeured motorbike sidecar adventure exploring the peninsula and the winelands beyond, take to the skies in a helicopter or paraglider, meet great white sharks at close quarters beneath the surface of the Atlantic, taste wine on a myriad wine estates, explore the summit of Table Mountain via one of the world's most jaw-dropping cableways and visit a colony of rare African penguins on a powder-white sand beach lapped by crystal-clear turquoise seas...
And when you're done with the above, there's Nelson Mandela's former jail cell on Robben Island to visit, the world-class Two Oceans Aquarium to explore and Clifton's incredible beaches to relax on before dining out in style at some of South Africa's best-loved eateries...
