Discover the history of the battle of Spioenkop and the Boer War and track rhinos in a picture-perfect wilderness on this three-night adventure in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands at the foot of the Drakensberg...
DAY 1: Arrive at Three Tree Hill Lodge
Just three hours by road from Johannesburg with spectacular views of the Drakensberg and rolling hills of the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, owner-run Three Tree Hill Lodge is a wonderful retreat into rural South Africa.
With views over the hauntingly beautiful Spioenkop – site of one of the most bloody battles of the Boer War – this is the heart of the South African Battlefields region with history literally on tap for those who want to understand more about the politics that led up to South Africa’s fight with Britain for independence and self-governance.
There’s more than Battlefields history here, though, with a beautiful game reserve adjoining Three Trees where guests can track rhino and see a variety of other plains game during wonderful guided bush walks.
The accommodation is superlative and the hospitality outstanding. So welcome to Three Trees and a getaway like no other.
After settling in to your luxurious suite with views over the surrounding hills, adjacent game reserve and Spioenkop itself, you can go for a wonderful self-guided ramble to get the lay of the land before meeting for dinner in the wonderful dining area, filled with its historic memorabilia from the area.
Enjoy a sumptuous three-course dinner and fine wines, while listening to your host explain the fascinating history of the area.

DAY 2: At Three Trees
After breakfast on the stoep (verandah) the day is yours to plan. You can choose to go on a self-guided hike, or a guided bush walk in the reserve where you can track white rhinos. Alternatively, grab a mountain bike and take a circuitous route around the farm and the surrounding area or perhaps go on a horse trail into the surrounding hills.
If you would like to explore the region on a self-drive excursion, Three Trees will happily pack a picnic lunch for you. Alternatively, book a guided tour of Spioenkop itself and discover about the tragic battle that took place there, spending a few hours in the hands of an experienced Battlefields guide who will share the story of this decisive battle of the Boer War.
Lunch can be arranged at the lodge if you would like (at an additional cost). If you’d like to spend time in the lodge itself, the lounge area is the perfect place to relax and read more about the history of the area and South Africa itself. There is also a wonderful library for guest use. Or relax by the sparkling pool with stunning views or do some birding in the extensive gardens.
Gather for sundowners overlooking the Drakensberg before enjoying another wonderful dinner followed by a nightcap or two.

If you decide to go out for the day, perhaps to explore the Drakensberg, a picnic lunch will be packed for you and you will return in time for dinner.
