This beautiful 300km stretch of South Africa's stunning eastern coastline takes in both the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces and is delineated by the N2 highway that runs from Cape Town all the way to Durban. Officially, the Garden Route starts in the coastal town of Mossel Bay and ends at the breathtaking Storms River Gorge, but it unofficially extends on up the Eastern Cape coast to the city of Port Elizabeth, taking in St Francis Bay and Jeffries Bay along the way.
It's the perfect route to explore by car, taking in ancient forests, rolling hills and towering mountain peaks as the route snakes its way along the coastline, moving through quaint little seaside towns and villages and some of the most spectacular scenery South Africa has to offer. From George and Wilderness to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, there's no end to the stops you can make along this route to take in everything the region has to offer.
Artisanal crafts abound, as do world-class restaurants, golf-courses and even wine farms. Winding up through the Outeniqua Mountains to Oudtshoorn - South Africa's ostrich farming capital - the route also takes in some of the most important palaeological sites in the country on its way to the Kango Caves. This is where some of South Africa's earliest known human inhabitants made their home. Explore Calitzdorp, Sedgefield and Brenton-on-Sea and wonder at the majesty of the Knysna Heads and the Tsitsikamma National Park with its legendary forest trails that skirt the ocean.
Linked by the Garden Route National Park which connects it to the Wilderness National Park through a series of lakes and preserved fynbos, the Tsitsikamma is a fascinating mix of eco-systems and well worth exploring for a few days, with its gorgeous, secluded bays and dramatic coastline.
Between St Francis Bay, Plettenberg Bay and Keurboomstrand you can see Southern Right Whales in season (June to November) as they come to the quiet bays off the Garden Route coast to calf. Take an ocean safari from Plettenberg Bay and discover some of the marine animals that call the coast home, from dolphins and porpoises to seals and sharks and a rich variety of seabirds. At Mossel Bay you can cage dive with great white sharks and enjoy sea kayaking and a range of watersports.
